Mechanistic insights into peroxymonosulfate activation and degradation of organic pollutants by modified sludge-biochar

Sewage sludge (SS) is the undesirable byproducts of municipal wastewater treatment plants, containing complexes of organics and inorganics. The increasing production of SS from wastewater treatment plants has become a serious environmental problem worldwide and the existing sludge disposal methods suffered from various issues of environmental safety and cost-effectiveness. Although numerous sludge valorization techniques are suggested in previous studies, the overall efficiency and the cost-recovery are quite low. Keeping in view the challenges concerning SS disposal, recent studies suggest that with the advancement of thermochemical conversion technology, SS conversion into biochar, can perform as an effectual catalyst for the activation of superoxides and photocatalysis for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this presentation, synthesis of sludge- biochar using different chemical modifications and pyrolytic conditions for altering the surface chemical composition is presented. Additionally, used of synthesized sludge-biochar as catalysts for PMS activation and subsequent degradation of organic pollutants is also explained.
