The environmental practice and trend: a comparative view between developing economy (i.e. Bangladesh) and developed economy (i.e. Australia)

The integration of environment in development theme often varies based on local economical dynamics. The thriving economy of Bangladesh, thanks to mass-manufacturing of exporting products, invests billions of dollars in building mega infrastructure projects, however, the strength and power of existing local environmental legal instruments seem to be inadequate to ensure the environmental quality. On the other hand, the development activities in Australia, a stable and developed economy, is often hindered due to stringent provisions of existing environmental legislations. Bangladesh, being at the receiving end of the devastating impact of climate change, ceaselessly claims associated compensation from the Global North, whereas Australia being part of Global North pursues ESG and climate mitigation in its development activities.

Having worked in environmental sectors in both Bangladesh and Australia in recent years Imtiaz Risha (An environmental engineering graduate of METU – Class of 1995) has observed a gulf of difference in environmental practices and trends between these two very different economies.
