A  pilot  scale  anaerobic  submerged  membrane  bioreactor  (AnSMBR) for  the  treatment  of municipal wastewater was operated. During the operation of the reactor, the temperature (from mesophilic  to psychrophilic  range) and other operational parameters, such as sludge and biogas recirculation, were changed, in order to observe the fouling  behavior  of  the membrane and evaluate the performance of the biological treatment. In addition, further experiments  were conducted  to  determine  the  effect  of  the  viscosity,  biomass concentration,  particle  size distribution of anaerobic sludge and gas sparging velocity on the performance of membranes.
After the presentation, anaerobic treatment in combination with membrane technology and the practical applicability of the anaerobic membrane bioreactor for the treatment of municipal wastewater shall be openly discussed.
