Cleaner Production Applications in the Textile Industry: Economic and Environmental Gains with Compulsory Best Available Techniques (BATs)

The Industrial Emission Directive is the main EU instrument regulating pollutant emissions from industries and it brings together seven previously existing directives including, in particular, the Integrated Prevention and Control Directive (IPPC). The IPPC aims integrated prevention and control of pollution in mainly six industrial activities based on several principles, namely an integrated approach, best available techniques (BATs), flexibility, public participation, and inspections.

One of the industries included in the scope of IPPC is the textile industry, which plays a significant role in the increase of environmental problems due to high water and energy consumptions with a wide variety of chemical consumption from the beginning to the end of the production stages.

This study aims to estimate the economic and environmental gains with the implementation of the IPPC Directive in the textile sector in Turkey. The BATs that are defined as compulsory BATs for the textile sector in Turkey will be considered and how these applications and implementations make advantages economically and environmentally for the textile industry is going to be researched. For each BAT, gains for a textile industry such as water and energy saving, reduction in the chemical or steam usage are going to be determined in the case of application of these and the benefits to be gained will be calculated by using obtained results from site visits and questionnaires and with the help of the textile industry BREF document and literature research. The results will then be used for the overall benefit calculation for the IPPC textile plants in Turkey.
